To create a school for the Hill tribes children to learn medical arts and return to serve their community.

In Thailand “Hill tribe” is a term used for the various tribal peoples who migrated from China and Tibet over centuries. They created villages in the thick forests and mountainous areas of the remote border areas between Northern Thailand, Laos and Burma (Myanmar). The six major hill tribes within Thailand are the Akha, Lahu, Karen, Hmong (Miao), Mien (Yao) and Lisu, each have distinct languages and culture.  The hill tribes are mostly subsistence farmers who use ancient slash and burn techniques to farm.  The Akha are closely related to the Hani of China's Yunnan province. There are an estimated 2-3 million Akha 50-70,000 of whom live in Thailand.

About the Akha People

The Akha generally live in bamboo houses raised on low wooden posts.  The huts are divided by gender.  Most villages have some contact with the outside world via solar powered satellite TV and most have a few motorized vehicles mostly used to obtain supplies the village needs.  They are seasonal farmers who focus on mountain rice, corn, and soybeans.  Akha villages are scattered widely throughout northern Thailand in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Because of their unofficial status, lack of education or trade skills and speaking non Thai languages the young adults leaving the villages are vulnerable to illicit trades and human trafficking and are often sexually exploited.
